317L (UNS S31703) slip-on flange is a low-carbon, molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel flange designed to slip over a pipe and be fillet-welded both at the hub (top) and inside the bore. 317L provides superior corrosion resistance over 316L, especially in chloride-containing, sulfuric acid, and high-temperature process environments, due to its higher chromium (18–20%), nickel (11–15%), and molybdenum (3.0–4.0%) contents. The low carbon variant (L, ≤0.030% C) eliminates carbide precipitation during welding, preserving corrosion resistance in the heat-affected zone (HAZ). Slip-on flanges are the most commonly used pipe flange type in industrial piping due to ease of alignment, lower cost, and simple installation.
