Overview

Nitronic 60 (UNS S21800 / Alloy 218 / Werkstoff 1.3815) is the industry-standard anti-galling stainless steel. Its unique 8% manganese, 4% silicon and nitrogen strengthening chemistry delivers self-mated galling resistance above 345 MPa — roughly 20–25× that of Types 304 and 316 — plus unlubricated wear performance comparable to hardened 440C, all in a fully austenitic, non-magnetic, readily weldable alloy with nearly twice the yield strength of 304. Corrosion resistance sits between 304 and 316 with chloride pitting resistance better than 316; oxidation resistance is good to ~980°C and Charpy toughness exceeds 54 J at −196°C. Shanghai Vertex Alloy Co., Ltd supplies Nitronic 60 round bars from 8 to 300 mm to ASTM A276/A479 with EN 10204 3.1 certificates; AMS 5848 and A193 B8S bolting grade available. Description (English)

Q1: What is Nitronic 60 used for? Nitronic 60 (UNS S21800) is the go-to alloy wherever stainless steel parts slide, rotate or are repeatedly assembled against each other: valve stems and trim, pump wear rings, pins and bushings, roller bearings, chain drive components, bridge pins and A193 B8S fasteners. It solves galling and seizing problems that plague 304/316. Q2: Why does Nitronic 60 resist galling? Its unique 8% manganese, 4% silicon and nitrogen strengthening chemistry. Manganese lowers stacking-fault energy to favor planar slip, silicon forms a tenacious surface oxide that resists film breakdown under contact pressure, and nitrogen raises the work-hardening threshold. Self-mated galling threshold exceeds 345 MPa — over 20× that of 304/316. Q3: How does Nitronic 60 compare with 304 and 316? General corrosion resistance falls between 304 and 316, but chloride pitting, crevice and stress corrosion resistance are equivalent to or better than 316. Yield strength is nearly twice that of both grades, and galling/wear resistance is in a different class entirely.
