Description (English)

Invar 36 (Fe-Ni36, UNS K93600, W.Nr. 1.3912, China grade 4J36) is a 36 % nickel-iron controlled-expansion alloy whose mean linear coefficient of thermal expansion is approximately one tenth that of carbon steel from cryogenic temperatures up to about 260 °C. The alloy retains good strength and impact toughness down to liquid-helium temperatures, is ferromagnetic below its Curie point (~230 °C), and is readily welded by TIG / MIG in the annealed condition. Supplied to ASTM B388, B753, B751, B829 and F1684 as sheet, plate, strip, bar, rod, wire, tube, pipe and forgings for cryogenic storage and transfer, length standards, optical benches, bi-metal thermostats, composite curing tools, satellite and missile electronic frames, shadow masks, and precision instrument components.
